Smart Budget in dividi shows the month’s limit, current spending, and status. The status is On track, Watch out, or Over budget.
For partners, the point is not to turn the month into a warning label. The point is to give both people the same reading before deciding what to adjust.
Where do you find Smart Budget?
In the month’s account view, dividi shows Set budget when no Budget exists yet. After a Budget is saved, the action becomes View budget.
Inside Smart Budget, the top card shows:
- the total Budget for the month;
- the percentage used;
- the amount remaining or over;
- the overall status.
Below that, dividi separates the Budget into pillars. Each pillar has a limit, spent amount, and remaining or over amount. A pillar can be over even when the full month is still manageable.
What does On track mean?
On track means registered spending is still within the plan and below the alert range.
This is the calmest time to review the month. You and your partner can check whether categories are right, whether recurring bills were copied correctly, and whether any known bill is still missing.
On track does not mean “spend without thinking.” It means the information entered in dividi still fits the Budget you saved.
What does Watch out mean?
Watch out appears when usage reaches the alert range without passing the total Budget. In the current implementation, that range starts at 80% used.
The status is a prompt, not a scolding. Ask three practical questions:
- Is a large one-time bill explaining the jump?
- Are any categories assigned to the wrong pillar?
- Are there predictable bills still coming before the month ends?
Watch out is useful because the month is not over yet. You can still adjust timing, category choices, or expectations before the status becomes Over budget.
What does Over budget mean?
Over budget means registered bills have passed the defined Budget for the month.
That does not automatically mean debt, failure, or irresponsibility. It means the limit in dividi is lower than the spending currently recorded.
The next question is concrete: what changed? A necessary bill may mean the Budget was too low. A one-time purchase may mean you will adjust next cycle. A repeated pattern may mean the Budget structure needs a new agreement.
How do the Budget pillars work?
dividi starts from three pillars:
| Pillar | Default share | App meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Needs | 50% | Essential and mandatory expenses |
| Desires | 30% | Comfort, leisure, and lifestyle |
| Savings & Goals | 20% | Investments and reserves |
These percentages are adjustable. When you save the Budget, you can change the distribution and customize which categories belong to each pillar.
Some categories have default suggestions. Others may appear as No pillar assigned so you can decide where they belong. That matters because a Budget is only as clear as the categories behind it.
When should you adjust the Budget?
Adjust the Budget when the screen shows a pattern, not just a surprise.
Three signs usually deserve a review:
- Watch out appears too early. The monthly limit may not match the current routine.
- One pillar is always over. Needs, Desires, or Savings & Goals may need a different share.
- No pillar assigned keeps growing. Categories need cleanup before the status can guide you.
If the bigger issue is not the limit but who covers the cost, combine Budget with Proportional split in dividi. Budget answers “how much are we planning to spend?” Split answers “how do we divide it?”
How should couples review Budget together?
Keep the review short and specific.
- Open View budget.
- Read the overall status.
- Check the three pillars.
- Review categories with no pillar assigned.
- Separate one-time bills from repeated patterns.
- Adjust the Budget only when the numbers justify it.

FAQ
Does Watch out mean we already passed the Budget?
No. Watch out means the month is near the limit but has not passed the total Budget. In dividi, the alert starts at 80% used.
Does Over budget mean we are in debt?
No. Over budget means registered bills passed the Budget saved in dividi. Debt depends on what happened outside the app, such as bank balances, card payment, or loans.
Can I change the 50-30-20 split?
Yes. dividi starts with Needs, Desires, and Savings & Goals, but you can adjust the percentages when setting or editing the Budget.
What happens to categories with no pillar?
They appear separately for review. You can assign them to the pillar that best matches your agreement.
Does Smart Budget replace a money conversation?
No. It makes the conversation shorter and less subjective. The app shows the status; you and your partner decide what to change.
