Proportional split in dividi applies different Joint Account percentages to shared bills. You set the percentages once, then shared bills use them automatically.
This is useful when a 50/50 split does not match the agreement. Maybe one partner earns more. Maybe one partner chose to cover a larger share for a season. dividi does not decide the rule; it applies the one you save.
Where do you set the percentages?
Percentages live in the Joint Account, not inside every bill.
Open Settings, go to the Joint Account area, and use Manage Account to reach Joint Account settings. In the members list, each person has a percentage field. The total must equal 100%, or the app shows an error.
You can also use Distribute equally when the split should be even.
If the second person is not in the account yet, start with Joint Account invites and permissions. The account setup should come before a long list of shared bills.
How does a 70/30 split work?
Imagine the two of you agree on 70/30. One member has 70% in the Joint Account settings. The other has 30%.
If you add a shared $1,000 bill, dividi treats the responsibility like this:

The bill still appears as one $1,000 bill. The split is used behind the scenes to calculate each person’s responsibility and the transfer balance when someone pays.
How does a 60/40 split work?
The same logic applies to 60/40.

The numbers change. The flow does not. A shared bill uses the percentages currently saved in the Joint Account.
Use examples like these as conversation tools, not rules. The fair split is the one both partners understand and accept.
How do you add a bill with proportional split?
After the percentages are saved, add a shared bill:
- Tap the main add button.
- Choose the Joint Account bill flow.
- Enter the bill name, amount, category, and date.
- In Split between members, keep the bill Shared.
- In the payment step, choose who actually pays.
- Save the bill.
When a bill is Shared, dividi uses the Joint Account percentages. If the bill belongs entirely to one person, choose that person instead of Shared. That keeps the bill in the account history without applying the proportional split.
What changes when percentages are edited later?
Life changes. Income changes. The agreement may change too.
You can edit the Joint Account percentages later from Joint Account settings, as long as the total remains 100%. New shared bills use the new percentages.
Past bills keep the split they had when they were created. The history is not rewritten retroactively. That makes the before-and-after easier to read when you change the rule at the start of a new month.
How do transfers help you settle up?
Who pays outside the app may be different from who covers the cost.
If Member A pays the full $1,000 bill, but the split is 70/30, Member A paid $1,000 while their responsibility was $700. Member B’s responsibility was $300. dividi can suggest that Member B transfers $300 to Member A.
The app describes this as a transfer amount based on each person’s responsibilities and who makes the payment. You still make the real-world transfer outside dividi, then register it in the app to keep the balance accurate.

What should you decide as a couple?
Decide when the split changes. A mid-month change can be valid, but it is harder to explain later. Many couples choose a clean point, such as a new month, a new job, or a rent change.
Decide what stays individual. A Joint Account can hold individual bills, but those should be marked as one person’s responsibility instead of Shared.
Decide how often to settle up. The transfer suggestion helps, but the rhythm is yours: weekly, monthly, or whenever the balance becomes worth clearing.

Can dividi split bills by any percentage?
Yes, as long as the Joint Account member percentages total 100%. Examples like 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, and 65/35 are all just combinations of the same rule.
Does every Joint Account bill use the proportional split?
Only bills marked Shared use the Joint Account percentages. A bill assigned to one member is treated as that person’s responsibility.
Do old bills change when I edit the percentages?
No. Past bills keep the split saved at the time they were created. Future shared bills use the new percentages.
Does dividi make the transfer for us?
